Photoshop, about 5 hours all told.

Basically, this is me trying my hand at science fiction's "Space Whale" trope. I've had this one sitting around for a while on my harddrive waiting for a coat of polish ever since I did it as a warmup that got completely out of hand. :XD: Today after I finished part of a commission, I didn't want to start a new pass I knew I couldn't finish in one sitting, so I decided to finish off this one.

This particular species is an interdimensional traveler, wandering from plane to plane and place to place through wormholes, which they have developed the ability to detect and stablize. They maintain an exotic field of warped space which allows them to travel freely to dimensions in which they could otherwise not even exist, let alone survive.

Transcendent ones are extremely rare in our universe (some speculate due to the unusually high instability of wormholes under our universe's physical constants) , so most spacers consider seeing one to be an extremely good omen. Numerous treaties between nearly all sentient species protect these gentle titans- even the most unsentimental races acknowledge their scientific value in the field of interdimensional research.

The few recorded successful attempts at communication with the Transcendent ones reveals that they are profoundly intelligent, playful, curious, and philosphical; and that they tend to see other species as rambunctious children to be watched over, lest their own games and clever toys lead to destruction. They imply (with a hint of sadness) that they have witnessed this thousands of times over in their wanderings.

Questions about their understanding of the laws of physics has resulted mostly in responses generally interperited as "amused patient laughter", followed by cryptic answers such as "music, not numbers" much to the frustration of physicists and engineers. Some small progress at enticing further explanation has been made by certain species they show a fondness for- humans appear to especially amuse them, for one example- but what little they have been coaxed into explaining has already begun to rewrite textbooks.
