Contest Entry for the
contest- a creature round, with the magic phrase "symbiosis".
Wish I could have had more time to work on this one, but this week was crazy, so I had to do the whole thing today.
Beat the deadline by something like 2 minutes.
The fishing trees of TR893C are a quite interesting case of plant/animal symbiosis. The tree's distinctive low-hanging fruit is seemingly a boon to the herbivores of the area, but any creature that consumes several of the fruits soon discovers that the plant has a much more sinister design: the fruits contain a mild tranquilzer, which causes disorientation, sleepyness, and in large doses, paralysis. It is only when the greedy creature is redered helpless that the tree's protectors swarm out of hiding to claim their latest meal. In exchange for free room and board, large colonies of the tiny, carnivorous creatures known by the locals as "Tree Teeth" protect the tree and eliminate any threat of overharvesting by a single creature, which limits seed dispersal, and their leftovers and waste fertilize the tree. They have also interestingly evolved an avesion to eating the stomach, ensuring the next generation of fishing trees has a protected start in the skeletons of their prey.
Human colonists have coined the phrase "Eating from the fishing tree", meaning "falling victim to ones own greed".
HUGE thank you to all who voted for me in the contest!
My first win in one of these!
I might have to post a more polished version separately at some point in the near future to celebrate.
