This is a commission done for Ember ( aka. Aldino [link] aka ~AldinoII) A portrait of Katan, the star of a freakin' awesome bit of cartoon animation done by a guy who goes by Cerberus on FA and futuresquirrel on newgrounds. Basically, Katan's what Ember and I decided to call a "Quetzatayra"- a critter somewhere between a Tayra (a dog-sized south american mammal related to the ferret) and a Quetzalcoatl. He's a temple builder by trade- and an adorable total bad@$$ when it comes to saving the day (trust me- you want to watch that video)
I think my favorite part of this piece was taking Katan from cartoon into a full-fledged photoreal rendering- kind of a reflection and expansion of a lot of the things I've been doing in my own art lately!
Done in Photoshop aside from the initial pencil sketches for the image. This is a significantly scaled down version of the piece- the full size version is about 10000x13000 pixels, for HD printing at poster size. Time taken: umm...a lot I knew from the start that this one was going to be a major undertaking given the size the final piece needed to be, but at a certain point it started to become a personal "how far can I push the realism with this one" challenge that I happened to be getting paid for- which the client was happy to indulge because they wanted exactly that: "as realistic and detailed as possible". Been working on this one for about three months now off and on as I got the long uninterrupted blocks of time I needed to devote to a piece like this one. (To give a rough idea of the scale here, a lot of those individual strands of fur are about ten pixels wide on the full size image...)
As absolutely elated as I was to get the final email that this was done. I was also pretty sad that this was the end of us working together, you were an absolute pleasure to work with and you deserved everything you got from this. Keep in touch and don't stop drawing.
This is very well done. He is a creative, charming creature and I like the sharpness of the detail on the gold and on the temple walls. Overall it's quite smooth
Keep in touch and don't stop drawing.
